'Remember Me' Producer Talks About Film's Impact

With the tenth anniversary of 9/11 coming up, USA Today did a piece on why you won't be seeing many feature films on the subject. Among the people they talked to, was Remember Me producer Nick Osborne:

The criticism even stung films with a tangential relationship to the attack, such as 2010's Remember Me. The Robert Pattinson drama featured a 9/11 surprise ending, which took a "drubbing" says producer Nick Osborne.

"Everyone was, to a certain extent, terrified of doing it," Osborne says. "It's such a sensitive topic. But it was the right ending."

What Will You Do To Remember?

It's been 10 years, but I still remember what life was like pre-9/11.. life was good. I was a TV news producer in San Antonio and even though jaded, had never encountered the horror and pain that I would write about for years to come after that September morning. Remember Me's portrayal of those events was judged harshly by critics, despite Will Fetters explaining what his intentions were while writing the script:

It seems people didn't seem to get what the film was about. I think on some level, even getting what the film is about, people aren't necessarily going to like it. I think preconceptions tend to play a role, and what this film was, in a lot of ways, was a study of grief and a study of these "bolts from the blue" that alter the trajectory of life

This year the mastermind of the attacks is dead, and a new Freedom Tower is taking shape as it gets closer to a 2013 debut. But for the families of those who died that day, life will never be the same. With the tenth anniversary of the attacks coming up, I hope you join Robert Pattinson News in honoring those victims. There are many ways you can get involved. We can never go back to life before 9/11, but we can certainly be united as a world community determined to not let it happen again.

'WFE' - NYC Adventure - Part 1 by Chilbunch

Last year when I went to NYC for the “Remember Me” premiere, I thought to myself…never again. I was not sure I could handle a lot of people in a barricade again without freaking out like I did for Remember Me. Ever heard the saying “Never Say Never?”  It turns out to be true…well at least in my case when it comes to Rob. Trust me I hear it all the time from my family and co-workers….”You’re doing what?”

But when I heard that “Water for Elephants” was going to premiere in NYC and it is only a two hour flight from Orlando, I thought I would give another shot for a premiere. I considered it full circle to see the red carpet because I loved the book and was impressed with the production of the movie. With my going to GA/TN during the summer for the filming I really wanted a perfect ending to this adventure. Plus getting a chance to see Rob would be a bonus and I shouldn't get started about Reese...I am a huge fan of hers! 

So this is the beginning of my adventure. I was waiting until everything kinda died down on the coverage of Rob on WFE to share my experience.

I left Florida the Friday before so I could sightsee in NYC before all the madness of trying to see Rob while he was promoting WFE. After sightseeing on Friday I was ready and excited to meet some fellow “Rob Fans” on Saturday morning for a “Remember Me Tour”. The tour was going to start at the Pearl Diner, where they filmed Rob as Tyler for several scenes. Everyone was set to meet for breakfast and honestly I did not know what to expect when I arrived. I was pleasantly surprised that the first girl I met was also from Florida. It was meant to be for me to meet Jeri and we just clicked as if we knew each other for years. It is just too bad we both were sightseeing in NYC on Friday alone and had no idea someone else from Florida was in town for WFE.

I don’t think the diner was ready all of us that showed up for breakfast. I wonder what was going thru the other customer’s minds to see a bunch of girls taking turns sitting at a particular booth and posing for pictures.You would have thought it was a King's Throne. But it was all in fun and I was able to meet the girls from “Thinking of Rob”, “Twi-Fans” and meet and become friends with Mandy from “Malicious Mandy”, Katina and of course meet up with my good friend Yvette who runs this site!

After breakfast we started walking over to WTC (World Trade Center) area to Ground Zero. I have been here several times, including on Friday, but every time I’ve gone I discover something new. First we came to the spot where they filmed:"Tyler walking his bike calling his dad for the last time" for the film. So it was picture time for a few minutes. Across the street from this location was the Trinity Church that many people seeked help during and after 911. After we looked in the church we walked down to WTC - Ground Zero...what is always very surreal.

'Remember Me' Coming To Showtime!

With Summit reaching a deal with Showtime to show Twilight and now New Moon on premium cable, we knew Remember Me was not far behind. This is the commercial airing right now that teases the film. We'll let you know when a premiere date is given. Sorry about the quality, best we could do.

'Remember Me' & 'Water for Elephants' On 'Best Of 2010' Lists

Remember Me is getting some more praise, this time from Moviehole:

I know, I know, ‘but it’s got that guy with more gunk in his hair than Liz Hurley does in her nether regions’ but c’mon! many-a-good-actor have started out in the cinematic mailroom and graduated to an awe-impressive high-rise suite – just look at Robin ‘Mork’ Williams, Josh ‘Goonies’ Brolin, Tom ‘Bosom Buddies’ Hanks or Stephen ‘Evil Ed’ Geoffries! (Ok, bad example) – ain’t Robert Pattinson innocent until the gavel slams down!? This film, a heartrending relationship drama (it’s both about the rapport between a young couple and also one between a young man and his estranged father) that played to the tick of a 9/11 countdown, proved there’s much more to “Twilight” vamp Robert Pattinson than blank stares, sparkles and tree hopping. Quite simply, Pattinson was an eye-opener in this film. Skeptics need see it.

 Scriptshadow says the Water for Elephants script is among the best of the year:

You know, this is one of those scripts that shouldn’t have roped me in the way it did. It’s basically a love story. But the great thing about Elephants is that it’s a love story wrapped in a loony dangerous unpredictable package - the Bizarro World version of Titanic. Not to mention it has the best villain I’ve read all year hands down (can’t wait to see what Waltz does with it). You’re not going to read anything like this again for a long time.

Eclipse was also named among the top films of the year by Access Hollywood, and Rob was among the most popular actors of 2010 in Just Jared's list.

As 2010 comes to a close, we can't help but wonder what project Rob will pick next. One thing is for sure, 2011 will be one busy year for him!

Movie Critic That Actually Gets 'Remember Me'

For all those sites/reviewers that just didn't get Remember Me, there's always a few that are now looking past the hype.. and putting a little balance in the mix:

Massively Underrated: Youth in Revolt / Remember Me



Youth in Revolt was an innovative comedy, but it was released during a time period where people skip the theatrical experience. And if Remember Me had featured Ryan Gosling instead of Robert Pattinson it would have been correctly hailed as great. But people got far too caught up in the ending and Pattinson's celebrity to catch that he was really freaking good in this movie. Definitely worth a watch if you you're a fan of relationship dramas.

LA Times readers also weighed in on their Most Under-Appreciated movie of 2010 poll. Fans of Tyler spoke up:

Does Rob Have A Shot At A Golden Globe?

UPDATE 12/14: The nominations are out, and Rob did not get a nod. Oh well, we'll be here to support him when he does!

E! Online says that is a possibility:

Remember Me. It was a cataclysm. But it had Robert Pattinson in it. And no one could deliver awards show ratings like Pattz right now. Ditto with Miley Cyrus in The Last Song.

While we disagree with that Remember Me assessment, we would love to see Rob get a nomination. Nominees will be announced bright and early Tuesday morning. Fingers crossed for Tyler.
