Dior Ad: Romain Gavras Mentions Rob In New Interview

Romain Gavras was interviewed by 'Io Donna' magazine (Italy), and talked about working with Rob for the Dior campaign (via).

Where did you get the inspiration for the video?

Working closely with the team of Dior. Hundred lifetimes in a day and the words of James Dean: "Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you were to die today." The result is a character who goes through emotions and different places. Then, with the cinematographer André Chemetoff and production designer Jean -Michel Bertin, we looked for the best visual grammar to tell this story fragmented.

How would you describe the Dior Homme man?

The man we want to represent is someone light, at ease in any situation. It could be on a deserted beach, in a luxury hotel or in an empty house in which he has just moved: he would always be himself. We wanted to move away from the stereotype of the successful, rich and arrogant, and that is why we have added details such as the eighties car that leads to a certain point. The woman is another great way to characterize a man: in the video she is a simple girl, who doesn't dress in a showy way.

Tell us story from the set?

We shot in Brooklyn, Rockaway Beach, immediately after the hurricane. Looking at the beach scene, you can note their signs, for example, the very high sand or cabins destroyed , which gave a strange, unexpected look in a video for a luxury perfume. Oh, and we also ended up in the sea with the car ... It took two boats and a tractor to bring it to the dry sand!

The main difficulty?

Probably the fact of having to film in so many places at once. We had to run all over New York with Rob, who is a big star in Hollywood, dodging paparazzi and all the rest, to not reveal the images of the campaign before the release. Also, before meeting Rob, I had no idea how it would go because we had hectic, very active schedule and sometimes actors don't like working under pressure. But he was great, he gave more than he asked, was with me one hundred percent. In addition, during the shoot, we had great fun.

What is your favorite scene

I really like the part on the beach, the first scene we shot. During the first shot there's something always interesting happening at that moment you'll know if what you had in mind will work or not. It was very nice to hear that it will work.

How was working with Rob?

Rob is extremely curious, he is leaving the phase of the Twilight "poster boy" to play more mature roles. He's already making interesting and choices. Speaking as a director, I can say that he's very easy to work with, an actor able to give so much.

Photographer Nan Goldin talks Rob and Dior Campaign

A body floating in the turquoise water of a pool, the face of a young man whose features still teenagers. A raw, intimate light that stirs the sensuality of the flesh. It is Nan Goldin. And if it weren't for the exceptional celebrity model, nothing in this picture - or in the other pictures that composed the series from which it is extracted - would not denote with the previous work of the American photographer. However, Robert Pattinson, the model we are talking about, is not really part of the elective family of Nan Goldin.

Neither clueless nor underground, the hero of Twilight had never met the artist before this project orchestrated by Dior, of which he is the new face for the Dior Homme fragrance. And without doubt, the photographer, a follower of the cinema of Antonioni and Fassbinder had never heard of him. But the alchemy worked: "I haven't seen his vampire movies, because they're not my style", says Nan Goldin with her hoarse timbre. "What interests me about him is his person. Robert is a lovely boy, so sweet , loves to play guitar. Music is his natural element, probably more than cinema."

With this series, the photographer wanted to reflect the grace of a young man. "One of the starting points was the portrait of the artist painter Paul Cadmus by Luigi Lucioni [1928] (image at the bottom of the post) exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum. Same brown hair, same blue eyes, Robert has something of this boy." Hundreds of fans were waiting around places of the shooting in New York, but the photographer has no recollection : "I didn't see anyone, but I think I heard about it."

WHAT IT GIVES TO SEE ROBERT PATTINSON is not his celebrity status - he spent most of his life trying to hide - nor his glamor image of the hero of a people culture of which he is totally foreign. Nan Goldin searched in the actor what she has always highlighted in her models: youth, the sexual body and the expression of an individual destiny.

"For the first time, I looked back, I plunged back into my archives, which I never do because I don't want to repeat myself, or plagiarize myself. And I found in The Ballad of Sexual Dependency [her most famous work, a slideshow of 800 photos between autobiography and documentary, shown for the first time in 1987 at the Rencontres d'Arles] an image that I wanted to inspire me: French Chris on the Convertible [1979](image at the bottom of the post). I wanted to find the same virginity, this same grace." So, for this command, Nan Goldin - whose last exhibition Scopophilia, date 2011 - is back to work . "As did Diane Arbus before me - be careful, don't say that I compare myself to her - I would like to make a book of my fashion photos, these images have long been despised by museums." In her London studio the artist completes a box. A mystery object that contains the series "Robert Pattinson" edited by Dior, in limited edition and will be sold in art places late November. "I'm happy with this project" concludes Nan Goldin wearily . "So much has happened since this morning. It is 7pm and I still haven't had breakfast..."

"Finally All Grown Up"

“For years I had the Twilight movies. Now, if you take a break for two years, there are 50 other actors there to replace you.”

“Luxury means to not have to worry.”

“Traditional masculinity doesn’t work any more.”

Not an easy catch.

Robert Pattinson about masculinity, luxury, and his personal style.
How do you feel as the new face of the Dior fragrance?
When Dior made me the offer I was shocked. Dior – the name alone is a myth… They asked after Twilight was over so the timing was right. They really piqued my interest.

So you were an easy catch?
Easy? No! (laughs) In the past doing a commercial would not have appealed to me because I couldn’t imagine that a real actor would do something like that. But meanwhile I have made a few movies and have grown as an actor. When we sat together with the director of the Dior spot to do some brainstorming I was fascinated by the artistic claim. I suddenly thought “What we do here is like a filmlet!” From this moment on I was really enthusiastic. So when you look at it that way the Dior campaign was a challenge for me. One that added to my past work in an exciting way.

The Dior man stands for luxury and natural elegance. What do these attributes mean to you personally?
The first thing that comes to my mind is an implied effortlessness. I think true luxury means to not have to worry about anything. When I shot the Dior film I actually really felt like that.

As the face of Dior Homme you’re supposed to speak to men your age. How would you describe your generation?
I’m 27 and I’ve just realized that no one is treating me like a child anymore. It feels weird to suddenly feel like an adult who is perceived by those around him differently than before. It’s hard to pinpoint what my generation is like. For most people my age the past ten years have been – just like for me – a transition period and many still try to find questions to the most basic mysteries of life. At least I do (grins).

A description of the 20-second ad

First we see Camille coming to him while he is sitting on the bed doing his shoelaces. We see her legs. He looks up to watch her. Then you see them on the bed, sitting down, she embraces him, kisses his neck, it is very sweet. Then there is a close up of Rob's face (gorgeous), eyes closed, lying on the bed, she is in his arms and he leans in to kiss her. Then there's the upside down underwater kiss with Camille! After that there is the gif Dior posted earlier today, Rob is walking on the rooftop in New York. Then we see Camille sunbathing at the hotel on the beach, and then back into the room she is dancing while tying the hair into a ponytail. And finally, Rob on the rooftop in New York, gorgeous, with his sunglasses. That's it!
