Projects Update: Map To The Stars, The Rover, Queen Of The Desert

The Rover

Rob is expected to be busy all year long with different projects. As he wraps up The Rover in Australia next week, the producers took some time to thank one of the communities that helped the film get made.

Map to the Stars

UPDATE 3/11: The Playlist shares new details on why the project may delayed, and Collider has a clip (2:50) with Weisz saying she's not in the film. Oh well..

Last we heard from David Cronenberg, Map to the Stars is set to begin production in May. But now there's word Rachel Weisz will not join Rob in the film as we had heard.

"I'm not in that. I'm unemployed for now"

With Viggo Mortensen apparently no longer attached to the project, it will be interesting to see if/when it gets off the ground.

Queen of the Desert

While doing a piece on director Werner Herzog, The Hollywood Reporter mentioned that Queen of the Desert is now in pre-production. At last check, it looks like this one will be filmed in the fall.

Producer Gives Update On 'Queen Of The Desert'

While production on Queen of the Desert seems to have hit a snag, today producer Cassian Elwes shared a quick update, and it looks like the film is still happening this year!

From what's been reported, it sounds like the production timeline for Rob will look something like this:

The Rover: In production through mid-March.

Mission: Blacklist: Slated to begin production in April.

Map to the Stars: Director David Cronenberg has said he would like to start filming in May. (Read update).

Hold on to Me: Rumored early 2013 production start, although nothing confirmed.

Queen of the Desert: September, according to this latest production update.

We'll stay on top of all the news concerning Rob's projects and pass it on to you.

'Queen Of The Desert' Headed To Berlin!

Despite the apparent production delay on Queen of the Desert, it appears plans to make the film continue full steam ahead. Variety confirms that Voltage Pictures will be pitching the project to potential buyers at the European Film Market this month:

Berlin will see a pair of queens up for sale: "Queen of the Desert" repped by Sierra/Affinity with helmer Werner Herzog attached, and Atom Egoyan's "Queen of the Night," being sold by Entertainment One Intl., starring Ryan Reynolds.

We're not going to lie, we were getting a little worried after Jude Law commented on his role (or lack of) in the film. But we are excited to see Queen of the Desert hopefully get some traction in Berlin. If we hear anything, you'll be the first to know!

Naomi Watts Says It's "Wait & See" On Queen Of The Desert

UPDATE: Jude Law has confirmed our fears about a delay in this project.

Collider:

No, Queen of the Dessert, I don’t think is going to happen now, or I don’t think that I can be involved in it anymore. I’m not sure what happened there, whether they can get it together I don’t know.

The Playlist:

As for projects that may or may not be happening, Law confirmed Naomi Watts' statement that Werner Herzog's Gertrude Bell biopic "Queen of the Desert" is now on hold and he will likely be no longer be available for it when it returns. "I don’t think that’s happening. I don’t think I can do that anymore," he admitted.

Like we said below, at least Rob has plenty stacked up for this year.

Naomi Watts just burst our happy bubble.

While talking to Josh Horowitz at Sundance she gave an update on Queen of the Desert, and it looks like it could be a while..

Watch on YouTube or below.

She later gave more details to E:

"It's still a way's off" - "I don't know yet. Hopefully, it will happen. I just can't travel again right now because I did a lot of traveling last year. It's been a big year and it's time for me to be home with the kids."

It sounds to us like this is one project that's probably not happening this year. Good thing Rob has Map to the Stars, Mission Blacklist, and Hold on to Me lined up!

Critics Look Ahead To 2013: Two Rob Films On Their Watch List

The critics over at Indiewire have put together a list, of the movies they are looking forward to watching in 2013. While we're not sure they'll be released in time for their proposed deadlines (2013), we are happy to see them as excited as we are, about Rob's upcoming projects:

"Map to the Stars"
Director: David Cronenberg
Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Rachel Weisz, Robert Pattinson
Distributor: None as of yet.
Release Date: Very likely to premiere in Cannes or Venice or Toronto, with a deal and release date to follow.
Why Might It Be a Must See: Whatever you think of Robert Pattison becoming David Cronenberg's newfound muse, their second collaboration in as many years looks mighty appealing. The long-delayed "Map to The Stars" also brings Cronenberg's other righthand man Viggo Mortensen along for the ride (as well as Rachel Weisz), and is said to be a complex Hollywood satire...  It's also the first film the Canadian director has actually shot in America. [Peter Knegt]

"Queen of the Desert"
Director: Werner Herzog
Cast: Naomi Watts, Robert Pattinson, Jude Law
Distributor: N/A
Release date: Nothing yet.
Why Might It Be a Must See: Just because he was recently seen onscreen as the villain in "Jack Reacher" doesn't mean Herzog has sold out. Every since "Rescue Dawn," the kooky Bavarian filmmaker has entered a compelling new stage with the narrative side of his filmmaking career, delivering bizarre, discursive dramas (can anyone really explain "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?") with the same loony poetry that often spills out of Herzog's mouth (that iguana bit in "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" was something else). Herzog's new movie looks like a consolidation of his life as an adventurous documentarian and oddball fiction work: The movie stars Watts as legendary explorer Gertrude Bell and Pattinson as "Lawrence of Arabia" author T.E. Lawrence. Herzog tends to bring out the maniacal side of his actors, which means this could be a thrill ride in more ways than one. [Eric Kohn]

'Queen Of The Desert' Filming Update

The real T.E. Lawrence

There hasn't been much news on Queen of the Desert since Rob was announced as taking part in the film. Lucky for us, producer Cassian Elwes is on twitter. While responding to a fan last night, he said production is expected to begin "early next year." While Rob said he'd be filming The Rover first, we're guessing somehow they will make it work. Elwes went on to mention, that Rob is playing the role of Lawrence of Arabia, which Peter O'Toole played before him. Here's a clip of the 1962 film based on the life of real explorer T.E. Lawrence. Continue reading the cliff notes aka wikipedia for a quick version of it.

Queen of the Desert of course will have its own story to tell, but this is what we know so far (via The Playlist):

The film will tell the true story of Gertrude Bell (Naomi Watts), the traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century. So who will Pattinson play? Only one of the most important figures in recent history, T.E. Lawrence aka Lawrence Of Arabia, who worked with Bell to establish the Hashemite dynasties in Jordan and Iraq.

We'll be following the latest as production gets going, keeping you updated on everything about the film. So excited to see Rob in this role!
